Shipping lines face container shortage
31-07-2010
Shipping lines, globally, are facing shortages of steel containers, which may mean delays to some household goods shipments.
Typically, a container has a shelf-life of a few years, after which they are replaced to ensure wear and tear has not reduced their quality. Shippers place re-orders based on expected demand.
Unfortunately, following the recent poor economic times, when sea-freight levels slumped, shipping lines have underestimated the demand for containers. While at best they anticipated a post-recession increase of 1%, the market has surpassed all expectation – with a 30% spike in sea freight.
We would like to forewarn our clients that delays to shipments are possible. However, if your assignees’ freight is likely to be affected, you will be contacted by your account manager who will talk through your options with you.
