Sterling Relocation

Sterling: Preparing for the Olympics

Welcome to our Olympics information pages

While the 2012 Olympics will be an exciting time for London, the Games will present unique challenges to those relocating employees into and out of the city. Sterling is here to help, and have pulled together a variety of different resources aimed at helping you during this time.

Short-term Accommodation

The Olympic and Paralympic Games are now a matter of months away. To date, 10.8 million tickets have been sold and an anticipated 5.3 million visitors are expected during July and August alone, swelling London’s population to a staggering 13.5 million.

As a result, we are expecting a shortage of short-term accommodation and hotel rooms in and around London; the London 2012 organising committee alone has already booked two-thirds of the city's hotel rooms.

Landlords and letting agents around the city are already inflating their prices, some by up to 50% more than their usual rates. Many short-term accommodations are refusing to extend leases that cease before Summer 2012, because they know how lucrative an 'Olympic let' can be. We recommend booking well in advance if accommodation is needed during the Olympics.

Household Goods Deliveries

The Olympic Route Network (ORN) and Paralympic Route Network (PRN) have been set up across London and rest of the UK to link all Olympic venues. These will be subject to transport restrictions throughout the period of the Games, and as a result of this we are expecting significant disruption, particularly in and around London. Closed roads, and parking restrictions on some routes, will make general driving, and especially the movement of household goods deliveries around London, very difficult.

Getting Around the City

London will be extremely busy during the Olympics. With an estimated 5.3 million visitors expected, all transport links will be operating over capacity. Businesses will be affected by employees who may have trouble travelling to work. Third party suppliers, such as estate agents, may operate reduced working hours, making them less accommodating and consequently inflexible.
